Sold Secure Padlocks

Sold Secure is a grading system which some insurance companies rely on to advise what strength of padlock you need. They come in Bronze, Silver and Gold. The list below gives examples of the locks we have which meet these grades and in most cases they will also meet another insurance grade such as CEN.

FAQs

Sold Secure is one of a number of testing standards for locks and padlocks. You will see the name or logo on many bike locks and very occasionally on padlocks. Sometimes your insurance company might specifically ask you for a padlock with a Sold Secure rating of Bronze, Silver or Gold. Roughly speaking here is a guide:

Sheds, storage boxes, bicycles:
Sold Secure Bronze

Garages, field / driveway gates, expensive bikes:
Sold Secure Silver

Warehouses, shutters, industry, containers, motorcycles:

Yes... Sold Secure is just 1 standard among many. Firstly ask what your insurance company requires as it may not be Sold Secure. It might be a different grade. Also the shape and design of the lock is not covered by Sold Secure strength tests.

For example a Close Shackle padlock is much better than a normal open shackle design. Therefore we would generally advise a Sold Secure bronze padlock with a closed shackle design is probably as secure as an open shackle Sold Secure Silver padlock, in the real world. This is simply because the closed shackle type padlocks are very difficult to cut off.
