Shipping & Container Padlocks

Here are a few padlocks that are either designed specifically for shipping containers or work very well with them, especially on the enclosed lock boxes which are often found welded where the two doors meet.

Traditional padlocks have curved shackles that don't detach from the body of the lock. The ABUS Granit locks and the shutter locks below basically negate this which makes them much more suitable as shown in the image below. Also see the FAQ about a removable shackle. A padlock where the shackle can remove is rare but for containers with lock boxes, it is very very useful! Have a look at the ABUS Granit Locks being used on our warehouse.

Ideally yes! Needless to say putting a decent lock will help but the best thing you can do is use a container with a lock box installed. If it doesn't have one then you can buy them and weld them on or buy the ABUS container lock system which comes with a box that you bolt on. Below is a photo of a lock box showing a straight shackled lock up inside the box. To cut that lock off would be a huge task and it makes a fairly average lock, hugely secure!

If your container does not have a lock box, then any lock with the right dimensions will fit. Just ensure the shackle is not thicker than the hole you're putting it through, and that the clearances and large enough once the padlock is shut.

If you do have a lock box then a square / shutter padlock will be best since you can put it up inside and slide the bolt in place. You can't do with that a normal padlock. That said, the ABUS Granit locks have a special removable shackle for that very purpose, so you install the shackle first, then slide the padlock onto its shackle once in place.
