Here are a range of cables and chains suitable for padlocks. We recomenend two things when it comes to using chain. If unsure see the FAQ's:

1. Ideally choose a Closed Shackle Padlock

2. Security chains for padlocks are much stronger

We tend to recommend ABUS chains over anything else since their hardening process is substantially better than other manufacturers.

So many people make the mistake of buying a normal open shackle padlock on the assumption that a closed shackle or discus padlock wont work. They assume you need to put both links of the chain onto the padlock. All good security chains have one large link at the end which means you put the small end link through the big link and then attach the padlock (See photo below). Hey Presto! You can now choose a more secure closed shackle padlock instead!

No, we found that the strength of the chains for off the roll cuts was not good enough to sell through our site. Our chains are high quality, toughened steel so difficult to cut through. Also a length of chain off a reel will end up with two ends the same size. This means you have to get both ends of the chain onto the padlock which would be difficult in some cases. Our chains purposely have one link larger than the other so you can fit any padlocks to it like this:

The purpose of a padlock and chain set is to have consistant strength throughout, it would be counter productive (and expensive) to have a padlock with a 14mm shackle (hoop at the top of the padlock) going through 10mm chain links because the links would be the weakest part.

However.... wherever possible, we always recommend closed shackle padlocks as these minimise the amount of shackle on show so you could go for a 10mm thick chain, with a smaller 8mm closed shackle padlock!
