Basically a discus just describes any round padlock of the same design. A Diskus is the trademark of ABUS for their round padlocks. It is a little like people calling using the brand name Hoover as a generic word for a Vacuum cleaner. This has come about because ABUS has generally made round padlocks that much better than anyone else.

Firstly they're made in Germany which makes a big difference! Secondly there are subtle differences in design. For example all the ABUS Diskus locks use a stainless steel case. Most of them also have a hardened steel plate inside the padlock which means they can't be crushed. Finally, they're built in such a way that they won't split in two when whacked with a hammer.

Sadly a lot of the other designs on the market don't have those attributes and a customer would never know the difference! Unless of course you're reading this now!

Diskus padlocks are a wonderful design since there is very little or no shackle on view when the padlock is fitted . This makes them particularly hard to cut off. They are key retaining which means that the lock must be shut and locked before the key will release. You can see here how a discus lock is much more tightly fitting than the brass lock which was easily cut.
